Candace

This week, we are featuring Candace (@ourftdjourney)! Candace cares for her mother who has been diagnosed with Frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Candace wanted to share her experience and resources with fellow caregivers who care for those with FTD so she started a Facebook page, blog, and Instagram page. Blogging is not only for others to learn from but also one of the activities she does for self care. Check out her blog here.

What skills are you most proud of gaining since you started caregiving?

I’m proud that I’ve been able to see beyond our past. I’m proud that I’ve been able to see the humanity and vulnerability in my mom and work towards forgiveness on a lot of things. And I’m thankful she trusts me with her life.

What do you like to do for self-care?

“Go for solo drives. Sleep. Blog.”

How do you make caregiving fun?

“I love to just engage my mom. Talk to her. Dance with her. She loves it!”

What is the hardest part of caregiving?

“The emotional roller coaster.”

What is a favorite memory you have taking care of your aging loved one?

“It’s the moment I was sick recently. I was wearing a mask, to protect her. She said, “aaaaaawwwww! What’s wrong?” And she took my mask off my face. It reminded me my mom is still there and still has the desire to help and nurture me, despite needing the help and nurturing herself.”

What is the best part of caregiving?

“The smile on my mom’s face when I’m in her presence. :).”

Thank you for sharing your story with us, Candace!
